Riverbank is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. It is located on the west side of the Richmond River, about east of San Francisco and south of Oakland. The name "Riverside" was given to the town by General John C. Frémont in 1849 because there were two rivers running through it - one called the Arroyo Gordo and another called the Donner River. The first post office was established in 1856, and the first store opened in 1861. In 1870, a railroad station was built, and in 1873 a Catholic church was built. In 1904, an oil refinery was built at Richland Oil Field #2 onshore nearpresent-day Richmond City Limits. The refinery made gasoline and diesel fuel available to area residents for their cars and engines until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1917, a large munitions plant operated by United States Munitions Company (USM) onsite at present-dayRichmond City Limits produced ammunition for World War I; however, this plant ceased operations after World War I due to prohibition by Congress). During World War II, Riverbank became known as one of several towns along the California coast that were targets ofOperation Neptune's Spear which aimed to sink submarines off California's coast as part of United States Strategic Bombing Survey Operation Paperclip which brought over many Nazi Scientists into America during World War II primarily for purposes of intelligence gathering. Today Riverbank remains an agricultural community with over 100 businesses operationally serving local farmers markets throughout Contra Costa County including much of Richmond District including parts of Walnut Creek Ranchos and Menlo Park

Riverbank is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 6,813 at the 2010 census. Riverbank is located on the Kern River, north of Bakersfield. According to the United States Census Bureau, Riverbank has a total area of , of which is land and (1.5%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,715 people, 3,952 households, and 2,559 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,584.4 people per square mile (553.2/km²). There were 4,052 housing units at an average density of 552.6 per square mile (220.9/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; <0.01% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 1%. Therewere 3953 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present., and 22% were non-families. 16%of all households were made up of individuals and 5 % had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older

Emperor Philip II began importing coffee from Spain in order to make his army more effective. Coffee soon became a vital part of Peruvian society. In 1825, a group of Peruvian entrepreneurs founded the Lima Coffee Company to provide quality coffee at affordable prices to Peru's growing population. The company grew rapidly and reached its peak under Emperor Agustín de la Rúa in the mid-19th century. However, during the 19th centuryPeru experienced severalImportant economic crashes that caused significant social unrest. In 1865, when General Domingo Cavallero took control of Peru's government, he implemented new policies that favored sugar cane over coffee production. This led to a major crisis for Lima Coffee Company because sugar cane replaced coffee as Peru's primary agricultural product. Cavallero was eventually impeached and forced out of office; this event helped start the country's long period of political instability which has continue up until present day

The town is located on the west bank of the Riverbank River, about north of Bakersfield and east of Visalia. It straddles the river's course between its northern and southern boundaries. The west side of town is accessed by State Route 168 from Interstate 5, while the eastern side provides access to US 101 from SR 168. According to the United States Census Bureau, Riverbank has a total area of , all of it land. As of 2000, there were 607 people living in Riverbank. Of these, 283 (27%) were male and 269 (73%) were female. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 16% of the population.
The Riverbank area of California was settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. The first European to visit the area was Captain John Smith in 1769, when he explored the Sacramento Valley. The area became a part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War ended in 1848. In 1851, Englishman George Hargrave founded what is now known as Hargrave Station on the Sacramento River. In 1864, American Major General George Custer and his regiment were killed during an battle near Rock Springs in southern Wyoming while cavalry troopers under Lieutenant Colonel Charles Benteen rode into battle unsupported and lost many men. This event is sometimes referred to as "Custer's Last Stand." In 1865, American General John Bierce invaded northern California and fought at Stockton along the riverbanks. On July 25, 1865, Bierce's forces clashed with Confederate general Robert Ewell at Battle of Emesa Hill outside of Stockton. After a day-and-a-half of fighting, Bierce's army was routed and Ewell emerged victorious with losses numbering over 100 dead or missing including some of Custer's horsemen who had been accompanying him into battle. Thisbattle is also cited as one of history's first engagements between Native Americans and Europeans.
