Riverside, California is a city in Riverside County, California. It was incorporated on November 3, 1889. The population of the city was 134,827 at the 2010 census. It is located in southern Riverside County and is bordered by San Bernardino to the east, Ontario to the north, and Fontana to the west. The first people who arrived in what is now Riverside were Mono people. On October 24, 1781 a party of four Mono men and two women set out from their homeland of Mono Lake in central California with a male interpreter named George Costilla as guide and traveled for eight days before they reached Orange County on October 26th. They built a small cabin there called Costilla's Cabin which stands today on 9000 block of North First Street. The first post office opened in 1887 at 8090 East Colorado Avenue but it was closed due to lack of customers when it moved to its present location near current day Cathedral City on December 1st 1888. On November 3rd 1889, when Riverside became an incorporated town it had a population of only 6 residents: John Fenton (Mayor), Wm Hite (First Selectman), Geo Atherton (Second Selectman) & Phebe Boggs (Svc Clerk). In 1896 R-I-C-O-U-N-T became an official name for town when area farmers ratified amendment #1 creating local government within specific boundaries defined by state statutes defining "Riverside" only as that bounded by Orange Avenue south/west; Glencora Road east; Sunnyside Boulevard north; and Ione Street northeast corner Meet Street on October 15th 1897 still under jurisdiction of Orange Co., but assigned all other business powers vested in Town Board including water reclamation etc.. The original Town Board consisted of Mayor John Fenton(first term...served one year); William Hite(second term...served two years); Phebe Boggs(third term...served one year)...and Geo Atherton(fourth term...served three years). On May 10th 1924 voters passed proposition #2 giving exclusive rights for water recharge rights in Imperial Valley to Los Angeles Municipal Water District effective July 1st 1924 which placed all municipal functions within newly created LA MWD including construction & maintenance dredging etc beyond reach or control of previous civic bodies responsible for such matters plus enabling annexation by any municipality with less than 500 registered voters immediately following approval thereof thru election held June 5th 1924 unopposed excepting City Of Glendale which successfully petitioned To Secede from Irvine Separate Government effective September 12th 1924 creating separate Governance Structure known as Glendale Riviera Water Recharge District effective October 1st 1924 consists now only of City Manager & five employees representing about 20%ResidentsofCity limitlessly extending ServiceArea upto approximately 105 Acres strewn over much rural agricultural land currently managed & operated byCity $ million annually contractually obligated wit them

In 1944, Riverside joined the United States military during World War II as part of Operation Neptune's Spear and played an important role in the victory over Japan. After World War II, Riverside experienced rapid growth with many new businesses opening up. However, this prosperity halted when crime rates began to increase. For example, Mayor Edwin Edwards' effort to make Riverside one of America's "smart cities" through his establishment of several water conservation programs; or Rudy Giuliani's successful bid for mayoralty in 1993 which led to increased investment within the city boundaries Today, despite experiencing continued decline in population density due primarily to suburbanization and gentrification across much of central LA county – especially along I-10 – Riverside remains one of Los Angeles' largest municipalities with a total population greater than that allotted for both Beverly Hills and Culver City combined
