Rocklin is a small town in the Central Valley of California, about 30 miles east of Sacramento. The population was 2,634 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south side of the Sacramento River. The Rocklin post office was established in 1868 and closed in 1918. The first settler in what is now Rocklin was John Haddock and his wife Mary (née Carbaugh). They arrived from Maine with their three children on November 4, 1868, and built a log house on a farm near present-day Stone Road. In 1870 they bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land along the river for $10 per acre ($2,600 total). In 1872 John Haddock married Eliza Parkman. They had five children: Alice (1873-1948), Edwin (1875-1947), Marionetta (1877-1964), Everett Hale (1879-1960), and Harold Leland Parkman Jr., who became known as "Pete" because he worked at local paper manufacturer Hearst Publications until his death in 1957. In 1898 Rocklin's first school opened when two teachers moved from nearby Yuba City to open a new school district that included Rocklin. In 1903 it merged with another nearby school district to form School District No. 5 which lasted until 1921; then it merged again with School District No. 6 to form School District No. 7 which lasted until 1959 before disbanding completely due to budget cuts during World War II; finally it merged into School District No. 8 which still exists today and has been in existence since 1965 when it split fromDistrict 9.] A post office called "Rocklin" was established at this location on October 14, 1868, by Wm Fenton Postmaster General James Payson.* The name was changed to "Rocklin" on February 20th of that year.* *Wm Fenton received Ute Indian trust land east of Redding for this purpose
