In 1848, Ramon Castro set up a gristmill in what is now downtown Rocklin after purchasing 640 acres of land from José Francisco Castilla. In 1850, John Caylor arrived to open a post office there with rocksprings as its name because he could find no other word for it in English. In 1872, James Hickey established an agricultural store here that became one of Kern County's most successful businesses. In 1888, Wm Hargrave opened an annual fair that still takes place today in downtown Rocklin. In 1893–94, Jens Jensen started to grow grapes here and named his vineyard "Jensen Vineyards" after himself and his wife Johanne Jensen (1863–1947). The winery produces wine that has been exported to many countries around the world including Europe and Australia. In 1916 when World War I began, much of Kern County was placed under martial law due to concerns over potential sabotage by German Americans living in the county; this led to increased production at Jensen Vineyards despite difficult working conditions caused by dust storms during 1915-16 which destroyed large areas of the Apple Valley section where vines were grown adjacent to military installations such as Camp Shafter east of Rockspring Road (now Ulysses S. Grant High School). Today only a few remnant trees remain from those days; however some notable wines still come out of Jensen Vineyards including: 2004 White Zinfandel ($35/bottle) – light ruby color; 2006 Shiraz ($39/ bottle) – straw yellow color with medium body; 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon $41/ bottle) – deep red color with firm tannins
