The National Guard in Rocklin, California was first organized on October 15, 1855. It traces its roots back to the Mexican War of 1846-1848 and the organization of volunteer units to support the military. The first unit in Rocklin was Company D of the 1st Regiment Californian Volunteer Infantry. During World War II, the Rocklin National Guard served as an infantry brigade under I Marine Corps commanded by Major General James Gavin. The brigade fought at Guadalcanal and Saipan where it earned three battle stars. After the war, Rocklin's National Guard troops helped establish Camp Pendleton which remains one of the most important military facilities in Northern California today. Rocklin is a small town in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley region of California, United States. The population was 5,811 as of 2010. It lies within the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Fremont (SAR) Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rocklin began as a farming community in 1872 on the north side of the Atchison River. A post office was established there in 1875, and by 1907 it had become an unincorporated community. Rocklin became an incorporated city in 1912. As of 2010, its population was 5,811 people. The name "Rocklin" is derived from Spanish Rancho San Carlos de Atchison County - meaning "the hill that rises to the east". The area now called Rocklin was first settled by Native Americans such as the Yokuts and Maidu around 1820 during goldmining operations near what is now Yuba City. The first permanent settler named Rocklin was John Sutter who arrived with his family in 1849 from Red Bluff, California via stagecoach. Sutter founded at least two other towns in this area: Sandy and Arden before he moved on to found Sacramento about 1850. In 1872, when American pioneer George White discovered gold near present day Rockslide Road and Lick Creek junction in central Sacramento County, he sent prospectors into what is now Rocklin for advice about where to prospect for goldthorn bushes that could be used to identify gold mines on private land adjacent to modern-day Rocklin village site. Some prospectors returned with valuable news while others did not find any gold but were disappointed because they had lost money investing there instead of farther downriver where they expected more potential discoveries awaiting them including at Gold Rush sites at Folsom and Placerville). In response to these early experiences some settlers decided to locate a community near their recent finds rather than risk losing access or finding no significant mineral reserves nearby like those along present day Route 66 which ran through town center back then only 12 miles (~3 km) away! An early attempt at setting up a schoolhouse here also failed due principally to lack of funds but soon after G W Brown opened up his new store next door (now part of Macy's Department Store) things got going thanks largely to donations from local residents notablyMrs Brown's brother Hiram Hinkley who provided bricks for building cornerstone entries into our earliest history books including one for "A Schoolhouse Built By George White For $5000." Even though most pre-schools operated out of homes or barns until 1902 when a large brick school house built by Mrs Jepson became all that remained standing Still today many residents attend public schools just south across I Street from downtown crime free zones!
