Rocklin is a small town located in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1877 by J.D. Beiler and named for John Rocklin, a Mexican trader who had settled the area. The population of Rocklin peaked at around 2,000 in 1920, but has since declined to fewer than 100 people. Rocklin is situated on the San Joaquin River between Fresno and Bakersfield. It is bordered by Township 6 north, Township 7 east, and Rancho Bernardo south; and by the cities of Bakersfield and Fresno to the west and east. The village of Rocklin consists of only a few homes, straddling the river on either side of Utopia Road. The first residents of what would become Rocklin were two families from Stockton who moved there in 1877 after being driven out of their native land during the Californio gold rush. Jens Jensen and his wife Anna started farming near where they now live on Homestead Road just east of present-day Utopia Road while their children Johann (Jody) Jensen and Maynard (Norman) Jensen took up agriculture northeast of present day Green Valley Boulevard between Cottonwood Drive and White Sands Boulevard. In 1880 an ad for $10 per acre appeared in The Grit newspaper addressed to “ settlers along Santa Fe Trail” offering access to “an Ideal Location for Agriculture” that included: A stream running through it which furnished water for irrigation purposes; good soil suitable for cultivating cotton; buildings needed only for housewives – kitchenette with ovens or ranges etc.; no need to build storehouses or barns; current prices are too low
