The name Rocklin comes from "rocky top" or "hillsocks". Located on the banks of the Feather River, Rocklin became a post-ceasefire settlement as part of the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1859, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at what is now Rockslide Park and named it for his friend and business partner General David Woolley. In 1862, American Civil War General Philip Sheridan and cavalry general Ulysses S. Grant came through this area on their way to Battle Of Mansfield Hill; they were met by local citizen Colonel George Custer near Rockslide Park before continuing on overland to Churubusco Wells where they celebrated New Year's Eve 1863 with a dinner at San Francisco Mission Dolores. A plaque marks the spot where these two famous generals stopped for refreshment in 1864 during their trip upriver to fight cattle rustlers. In May 1861, James Kapp purchased land east of present day Rockslide Park from Mexican land grantee José Castro for $8 per acre (about $220 per km²). This site would become Kapp Ranch which had been developed into an agricultural community by 1915 when it was purchased by William Randolph Hearst who gave it its current name of Hearst Castle Estate in 1923 after he bought most of it from Mrs. Alice Mabel Dodge Hearst. In that year also saw construction begin on what would eventually become Rocklin High School – one of many new educational institutions built throughout Kern County during that time period including Bakersfield High School (now known as East Valley College), West Hollywood Elementary School (now known as Westwood Academy), and North Hollywood Elementary School (now known as North Hollywood Middle School). The first post office in Rocklin opened in 1865 under the name Red Bluff Post Office because all mail was carried out overland then across Ramona Pass between Red Bluff and Springerville until Telegraph Road became available northward via Grants Pass Crossing.. In 1875, Gold Rush era rock miners discovered gold near present day Rockslide Park while prospecting for quartz veins near Menifee Flat; this led to increased activity hereabouts which continued until about 1886 when prices began declining due to new technologies being developed elsewhere.. A school district was organized in 1888 when three small schools combined to form Kernville Union School District #4 which served students from eastern Hanford Township through western Riverside County southward to Anacapa Island off Point Reyes National Seashore).. By 1897 there were 10 schools within the newly formed district including four high schools plus one vocational high school: Desert View Female Institute; Coalinga Male Institute; Goodyear Girls' IndustrialSchool; Imperial Normal & Agricultural Academy; Kearny Mesa Male Institute; Lemon Grove Female IndustrialSchool; Mountain View Male AgriculturalSchool ; Old Spanish Missions Female IndustrialSchool ; Rolling Hills Male Institution ; South Pasadena Male Avenue Training Institute .
