The Air Force has a long and rich history in Rohnert Park, California. The first USAF Base was established at Rohnert Park in 1951. In 1963, the USAF activated the 9th Air Division and moved its Headquarters to Rohnert Park. In 1969, the USAF activated the 10th Air Division at Rohnert Park and it is now one of eight active Air Forces Centers located throughout the United States. The AFB moved to its present location on May 1st, 1972 when it merged with what was then known as Headquarters-Air Defense Command (HAC). Today’s HAC headquarters are located adjacent to Edwards AFB on Airport Boulevard in north El Sobrante. During World War II, RAF Bentwaters RAF Station became home to the 3d Bombardment Wing (3 BW) which flew Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers from 1945 until 1952 when it was transferred to USAAF control. RAF Bentwaters remain an inactive airbase today but is still occasionally used for flying training by allied pilots during exercises such as Joint Warrior or Global Hawk Independent Aerial practice flights. The 3 BW also operated Boeing B-47 Stratus Bomber aircraft which were built on Long Beach Island starting in 1948 until their retirement in 1958. There are more than 820 acres (300 hectares) within Rohnert Park proper and 2,500 acres (1,000 hectares) outside it accessed through various trails or roads which make up its network.
