Rohnert Park is a small city in Marin County, California, located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The population was 34,236 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Rohnert Park were the Englishman John Golding and his party in 1824. Golding explored and charted what would become Marin County before opening a salt mine there in 1827. The site of today's Rohnert Park was actually named "Humboldt" after American explorer George Vancouver's surveyor, Joseph Humboldt. The name change came about because it became clear that someone else had discovered oil within the area, possibly under Solano County or even downriver at Petaluma (now Santa Cruz). In 1849, gold seekers James Wolk and Samuel Latham founded an irrigation colony near present day Petaluma while still exploring Humboldt Gulch for gold. As early as 1853, farmers began leasing bits of land from Mission Dolores founder José de la Luz y Urquiza for farming purposes; this led to the establishment of various villages around Colma Lake including Ross Valley and Norwood Valley which became incorporated into Rohnert Park in 1865. On July 20th 1870 during off season grazing by stock owners on Rancho Rinconada (now part of Menlo Park) west of town center some men managed to shoot two pronghorn antelopes from a large stand just past University Avenue east of College Street; this event is said to have started what would be known as "Granola Days".
