The first time the Rohnert Park Army National Guard ever set foot in California was on July Fourth, 1846. A detachment of soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment, Infantry were ordered to establish a post at Monterey Bay. The battalion arrived in Northern California on July 10 and made its way up the coast to Rohnert Park. Until recently, there was no record of what happened to these soldiers after they left California. However, recent research has revealed that on July 4th of that year, two men by the name of John Neely and James Whelan came ashore at Monterey Bay and claimed land that is now part of Rancho Santa Fe. They also took with them some military equipment and supplies which may have been used by the Rohnert Park Army National Guard during their stay in California. Whatever happened to these soldiers after they left California is still unknown but it is safe to say that they had a lot to do while in this new state!
