The Coast Guard has been a part of our American society since the early 1800s. Today, there are over 5,000 Coast Guard personnel assigned to protect our nation's coasts and waters. The mission of the Coast Guard is to provide safe and secure sea travel for Americans and support maritime operations; respond to emergencies in the ocean; maintain coastal security; promote fishing and commercial boating safety; perform search & rescue missions; help preserve America's environment by conducting environmental monitoring; and build community relationships through education. The history of the Coast Guard gift shop begins with two items donated by two friends in 1884. These were two life jackets from a ship that had sunk off Long Island. They were not only donations but also something that would be used on many occasions. One gift from 1895 was a set of copper fire extinguishers which proved very useful in fighting fires on board ships during prohibition years. In 1933, the first Coast Guard Museum was opened in New York City as part of then Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison’s request for an institution to document and remember America’s marine service. At that time, it was not clear whether or not gifts would be accepted as part of museum collection donations so Admiral Morison issued a directive stating that any donation (gift or otherwise) must be accompanied by written verbal acknowledgment within five days following receipt at Headquarters Commandant’s office. The first formal gift from a public source was given in 1934 when Rear Admiral Halsey Perry gave Congress three cups inscribed “To His Excellency Vice Admiral John Jelliffe With Regards – Commander-in-Chief United States Sea Service” This cup is still held by Headquarters Commandant today as one of the earliest examples of official government recognition bestowed upon an individual recipient (Gift Shop Manager). In 1951, Commodore John Waddell became Commandant when Lieutenant Colonel Calvin Cates took over command after LtCol Edwin McMillin retired due to ill health. Commodore Waddell soon ordered all gifts apart from uniforms into storage until such time as new regulations could be put into effect regarding gift giving which led to the beginning of what would become known as gifting season (within six months). It wasn't until 1969 that gifts could again be given out outside Of Government regulation (i.e., Gifting SeasonRules No longer apply). In 1979, Gifts began being accepted inside Of Government regulation once again becoming known as Gift Season rules applied only To specific types Of Gifts such As uniform Gifts And Awards Received From Local Authorities/ Municipal Employees/Volunteers/ etc……….. After World War II ended, many people moved into the area around Rohnert Park and it lost its popularity as a vacation spot. However, it continues to be used for recreation today.
