Rohnert Park is a city in Southern California, located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay. The population was 24,878 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to Berkeley and Oakland. The first European explorers to visit Rohnert Park were Spanish traders in 1769 and 1770 who named it Rancho San Antonio de Asís after General José Manuel Pinzón's war against Mexico. In 1846, when California became a U.S. state, Rohnert Park was part of Contra Costa County and its name changed to Redwood City after the redwoods that lined the waterfront thereabouts. Redwood City experienced rapid growth from the late 19th century until World War II when it lost much of its population due to military service and other factors including fires that destroyed most of downtown Redwood City during the 1906 earthquake; this event also devastated rural areas around town with devastating consequences for local economies since many farmers lost their land as well as their infrastructure and human resources necessary for farming operations which had sustained these communities for centuries.
