Rohnert Park is a small city in the southern San Francisco Peninsula, on the north shore of San Francisco Bay. The population was 31,827 at the 2010 census. It is about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of downtown San Francisco and about 16 miles (25 km) northwest of Oakland. The name comes from two early Californios, José Feliz and Antonio Vallejo, who named a part of present-day Rohnert Park after their Rancho Los Altos. The first permanent American settlers in this area were members of the Mission Belles families who arrived in 1846. They started Clear Creek Valley division No. 9, now part of Capitol Heights neighborhood which they founded as self-governing mission villages under British rule before independence was granted to California in 1849. The first post office in Rohnert Park was established in 1851; it became known as Benicia Post Office until 1865 when it changed its name to Rohnert Park Post Office because then-Governor Edwin Mifflin offered land for an new post office near his rancho at what is now Foothill Boulevard and Masonic Avenue). In 1906, Supervisor John Prentice recommended that parkland be set aside for public use on Castro Street between 19th Street and 21st Street NE; Supervisor Ignacio Carrera approved this recommendation on March 10, 1907. On July 15, 1907 the City Council voted 6-1 to purchase 134 acres (50 ha) from Mr. Lenox Ewing for $225 ($ million today). This donation created Orinda Open Space District #2 which includes most of today's Rohnert Park including much of Castro Street corridor east of Western Avenue/El Camino Real/Foothill Boulevard south to Golden Gate Bridge/Bayview Avenue southeast along Folsom Boulevard until El Sobrante Road reaches Alameda County line where it becomes Highway 101 again

The park was named after General John Rohnert, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery. The park covers 5 square miles and has more than 100 acres of forest, open space, and lakes. The first humans to live in what is now Rohnert Park were Native Americans who hunted game near the present day Candlestick Point National Monument. In 1864, Captain George Vancouver discovered oil potential at Rohnert Park when he sailed past on his HMS Beagle. After several years of exploration, four companies drilled an estimated 432 million barrels of oil from shale formations at Rohnert Park and other areas in Marin County. The City of Berkeley acquired 1/3rd interest in these operations through donation from J M Holland & Son Limited Partnership in 1918 as part of a program to promote public works within Berkeley during World War I. For many years following World War II until 1957, most petroleum production ceased due to environmental concerns about rapid urban growth worldwide and the depletion of natural resources needed to support it; however small quantities continued until 1973 when hydraulic fracturing (fracking) became commercially practical concluding over 50 years of exploration and development that led to savings for industry while preserving our environment
Rohnert Park is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Golden Gate Peninsula and between San Rafael and Sausalito counties. The first Europeans to visit Rohnert Park were sailors on HMS Beagle in 1821. They named it "Isla de la Muerte" (Island of Death). The land that now makes up Rohnert Park was first developed as farmland by John Pemberton in 1867. He purchased of land east of Pacific Avenue, including what is today's downtown area, from the Native American tribe Kumeyaay. In 1870, JF Dutton bought another piece of land north of Pacific Avenue from the Kumeyaay for $1,500. Dutton donated most of his personal fortune to help finance the development of Rohnert Park. In 1872-73, he built two large blocks north of present day Market Street and east of Interstate 15/Highway 101: North Block (now part of Adobe City) and South Block (now part of Walnut Creek). Dutton also funded a number of public works projects throughout Rohnert Park such as a new schoolhouse and parkways. His donation forms are still preserved at the Marin County Historical Society in Petaluma. In 1886, George Earle Andrews acquired an adjacent piece of property southwest of present day Highway 101 for $10 per acre from Dutton's widow Evalyn Ewing Andrews. She donated this tract to Rohnert Park so that it could be used for agriculture instead of being developed into residential areas like nearby Richmond or Sausalito (). The town began to form around this agricultural zone with shops, churches and homes starting to appear along Mountain Road towards Highway 1 back in 1909 (). One reason why this area became known as "the Valley" may have been because much later when Highway 101 was built there were no barriers between Nimitz Valley on one side and Route 1 on the other! As more people moved into these developments within Rohnert Park there was an increased need for schools; however due to budget cuts during World War II many local schools closed their doors or merged with other districts (). However some notable exceptions include Mission High School which continues operating today despite closure during World War II (); Redondo Middle School (); Lakeside Elementary (); Glen Ellen Elementary (); Sonoma East Intermediate School (); Livermore Jr./Sr., Morse & Snively Middle Schools () as well as Cowell Junior/Senior HS (). Today there are over 100 schools within Rohnert Park including 7USDUSD elementarySchools (), 12USDUSD middleschools (), 5USDUSD highschools (), 2formally accredited colleges/universities (), 4 USD Free community college students ).
