In 1975, The Marine Merchant relocated their store to its present location on Main Street. From that time until 1984, The Marine Merchant donated two seagoing vessels (the SS "Oscar" and the SS "Edna") to the city for use as part of Rohnert Park's Marina District. In 1984, Mayor Tom Bates designated Pier 79 at Pier 17 as the "Marine Museum Pier." Since then, The Marine Merchants has been donating additional vessels (including a large cruise ship) each year to make this pier available as a Municipal Marina District open space accessible to all who appreciatemarine gifts. Rohnert Park is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 15,828 at the 2010 census. It is located about 9 miles (16 km) north of downtown San Francisco on the edge of the Haight-Ashbury district. The first European to visit Rohnert Park was Jedediah Smith in 1837. In 1870, American scientist Dr. George Hennepin founded what would become UC Berkeley and named it after his friend and mentor Benjamin Rush: Hennepin University of Minnesota Campus - Rohnert Park. The park's name comes from General John Atherton's 1795 map of California which noted "a beautiful view from here over the bay towards Point Reyes". Rohnert Park was developed as part of Mayor Dianne Feinstein's plan to create a new city on the formerly rural Outer Richmond District between Market Street and Interstate 280. With its opening in 1969, it became one of the first planned cities in America with complete streets and public transportation without a streetcar system or buses. Since then, it has been home to over 100 organizations including 60% of all Silicon Valley startups, many large technology companies and 10% of all high-tech jobs in America.
