Rohnert Park is a city in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 25,641 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sonoma County. Rohnert Park is located on both sides of the Napa River and includes parts of what are now Muir Woods and Glen Ellen. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rohnert Park were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on their flagship "San Francisco" in 1542. By 1777, when it was part of Rancho Santa Rosa de Alhambra, Spanish colonists had built up extensive vineyards there which produced wine for Spain and other markets around the world. In 1849, following the Mexican-American War, California became part of the United States and Mariano Rivera served as its first Latino Mayor. In 1853–54 American Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant visited Rohnert Park while campaigning in Northern California; he noted that “the beautiful hills hereabouts look like those near Sacramento” In 1875 entrepreneur Nicholas Greek decided to build a town here called Russian Hill after visiting Russia’s largest wine region, Tver Oblast (now southern Siberia). Russian Hill quickly became one of Northern Californias most vibrant communities with an active business community and many successful entrepreneurs who made their mark on local history such as Atherton restaurateur George Antonelli – father of modern Italian cuisine – hotelier John Daly (founder of yachtsmen's clubhouse Monterey Peninsula) and banker & philanthropist James Phelan (founder & president Emeryville Bank). In 1906 private developer Harry Chandler acquired land south of Russian Hill from Russian Hill residents for $7 million dollars making it one of America's leading citrusgrowing regions. With over 100 acres leased for or sold off to grow oranges, tangerines, lemons and limes at various levels of production throughout much of Northern California Chandler pioneered new transportation methods - truckloads would drop off large stocks at his field sites then be driven back upriver to ports where they were unloaded onto ships bound for San Francisco or other points east before sailing home again - this allowed him to export more than 2 million pounds (1 ton) per year worthof fruit directly into San Francisco Bay without having to go through any major cities like Oakland or San Rafael! Rohnert Park was founded in 1867 as a result of the land sale between John Sutter and his brother, Charles. The park is named after General George Armstrong Custer who was killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.
