In 1843, James Forbes purchased land east of the present day university campus from the California Missionaries Society for $1 million. The park originally consisted only of Forbes' property and was used mostly for grazing animals and pleasure trips by his wealthy friends and family. However, over time it grew into one of northern Marin's most popular recreation areas with more than 100 miles (160 km) of hiking trails and more than 30 beaches including Point Reyes National Seashore as well as golf courses, tennis courts, horseback riding stables, lakeside resorts and villages including North Beach (now known as Embarcadero), Cliff House (now known as Russian Hill), Yerba Buena Island (now part of Daly City), Dunster Meadows (), gisteria (), Castro Valley () and Strawberry Creek (). In 1933 – years before San Francisco annexed Marin County – voters approved an ordinance providing for annexation by San Francisco. On July 1st that year, Rohnert Park became part of San Francisco

One such business that managed to stay open throughout all these changes is The KFC – which still exists today as one of Raton's most popular tourist attractions! In fact, according to their website – “the drive-in restaurant featuring chicken fingers with your choice Of dipping sauce on two hamburgers or fries cost just $4 per person during happy hour (4pm-7pm), Monday thru Friday”! This spot remains one of Raton's most popular tourist destinations due to its incredible atmosphere and amazing food!
