The first public access to the park was on a tiny piece of land northeast of downtown. In 1878, Congress appropriated $5,000 for the creation of a large public park north of San Francisco Bay. The original donation was followed by donations from other prominent people in California and elsewhere in America. The necessary property was purchased at a cost of $30,000 from J.P. Morgan & Company and others in 1881. In 1907 Captains George Rochefort and John Matson donated over one million dollars to improve and expand the park system which includes today's popular areas such as: North Beach (now known as Fisherman's Wharf), Chinatown/Kowloon, Russian Hill/Hunters Point/Beachwood/Downtown Oakland etc., making it one of largest open spaces in United States
