In 1876 electric streetcar service began between downtown San Francisco and various outlying communities such as Tiburon (then known as Sausalito) via what is now Highway 1A east of town center; it was eventually extended north along I-5 to Rohnert Park via route 101 until 1951 when it was discontinued because of budget limitations within Municipal Railway District No. 8 (MRD No. 8).
