The first post office in Rosemead opened in 1896; it closed in 1914. Today, there are only a few remaining buildings from the original town center that once thrived around an intersection of State Route 101 and Seventh Street. The oil industry played a significant role in Rosemead's growth during its early years; rose meads were one of several places where production took place. By 1907, over 40 wells had been drilled and production began to increase rapidly. However, as gas prices increased and competition increased from other industries,Rosemeads Oilfield declined by 1910-1911 due to reduced investment and depletion of resources caused by global warlords seeking control over oil supplies. In 1923, local entrepreneur Haddon Sweeny organized what would become known as the "Big Three" companies - ChevronTexaco, Phillips Petroleum Company (now ExxonMobil) and ARCO - into what would be known as The Western States Petroleum Company (WSPC). Over time WSPC steadily lost majority ownership to these more aggressive corporations whilerose meads prospered largely through tourism which continued to grow throughout World War II thanks to GI Bill appropriations for college students studying engineering or science at US universities across North America.
