The history of artisan coffee begins with the arrival of coffee beans from Africa in the early 1800s. Coffee was a popular drink throughout much of Europe, but it was not until the late 1800s that it began to be exported to other parts of the world. One of the first places to experience great coffee from Africa was in Rosemead, California. In 1892, Italian immigrants founded an Italian grocery store on First Street in Rosemead and started selling coffee. The store became known as Borgo Caffè and would continue to sell Italian-made espresso and tea for many years. In 1951, Donatello Bertoni opened Borgo Caffè & Teavana on Second Street in Rosemead. This shop would become one of the most influential artisan coffee shops in America and help pioneer the modern artichoke cupcake craze. Bertoni’s café would serve up unique blends of espresso and tea each week, helping to develop what is now known as Paso Robles-style espresso. The success of Bertoni’s shop led him to open additional cafes throughout California before he passed away in 2006. The first coffee beans were grown in the area now known as Rosemead, California, in the early 1800s. The town was founded by two brothers who ran a small farm. The beans they grew were ground into coffee and sold to local merchants. The first roasters in Rosemead were Juanita Cavanaugh and her husband Harry Cavanaugh. They started up their own shop on Seventh Street near San Gabriel River in 1903. The couple grinded their own beans and served their customer’s coffee at home until 1916 when they opened a store on First Street between San Gabriel and Pasadena Streets. In 1924, Edwin Biddle opened his own grocery store in the center of town and began selling imported coffee from Europe. He also bought some of Juanita Cavanaugh's original equipment for use at his store. In 1928, he merged his businesses with Harry Cavanaugh's to form Harry & Edwin Coffee Roasters Incorporated (HECR).
Rosemead, California is located in Kern County, California. The population was 17,913 at the 2010 census. It is a small town that lies on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The first Europeans to visit Rosemead were Jesuit missionaries in 1847. They named it Santo Domingo after their previous mission in that area. The town began as a small agricultural community and gradually became an industrial center due to its position on the river and its location near other manufacturing towns like Bakersfield and Stockton. In 1959, Rosemead became part of the metropolitan Los Angeles Area when Southern California was divided into five metropolitan areas. Today, Rosemead remains a small town with a rich history that has been followed by many people from throughout Southern California. The many industries that have contributed to its growth include agriculture, automotive manufacturing, retail trade, real estate development and health care services. The downtown district is home to several businesses including The Pines Restaurant which opened in 1978 and closed in 2018; KFC World Headquarters which opened in 1959 and closed in 2018; American Honda Center which opened in 1984 and closed in 2017; and the old post office building which still serves as a commercial property today but also contains apartments for rent inside. There are also several smaller businesses scattered around downtown such as Asobama BBQ & Pizza (a local chain), Goldenvoice Recording Studio (a recording company) and Goodwill Industries of Kern County (a social welfare organization).
As the world’s second largest coffee producer, Ethiopia has a rich history of coffee production. The country has been cultivating coffee beans since at least the 6th century AD and is thought to be where the first ground coffee was roasted. In 1896, Emperor Haile Selassie I decreed that all Ethiopians must drink coffee, and in 1935, Coffee Marketing Board (CMB) was established to promote Ethiopian coffee as an important global commodity. CMB continues to this day as the world’s exclusive distributor of Ethiopian coffee. The first espresso machines were built in Italy in 1912 by Angelo Bagnoli, who named his machine “Bari espresso” after his birthplace Bari in central Italy. For more than 100 years, baristas have used manual techniques to make their own espresso drinks using a French press or a hand pump. Today there are many types of machines available for home brewers and professional baristas alike, yielding different flavors and styles of espresso. Though roasting beans can be done manually or through automated equipment, most commercial mills use rotating cones that roast beans in multiple cycles over time with uniformity resulting in dark-colored beans that taste bombastic and earthy. This characteristic is what gives Ethiopian coffees their unique flavor profile which can be enjoyed freshly roasted or processed into ground forms for purchase online or at specialty stores around the world.

The term "artisan" was first used to describe these roasters, and not all of them were actually located in the US. In fact, some of the best-known artisan coffee businesses are based out of Europe or Asia.
Rosemead is a small town in California, located about an hour outside of Los Angeles. The population was 1,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Gabriel Valley region and is bordered by Annex to the south, Alameda to the east, Lancaster to the north and east, and Pasadena to the west. The community began as two stations on a branch line from Los Angeles that connected West Covina with East Covina. The first post office in Rosemead was established in 1892. In 1907, Rosemead became an independent city when it absorbed neighboring communities Alhambra and Lancaster. At its peak in 1930, Rosemead had a population of 30,000 people. However, during World War II it lost much of its industrial output due to the war effort; however, some businesses did continue until after 1945. Afterward there were modest growth rates until the late 1980s when suburban development swept through Roseseed and other nearby towns During this time there were a few notable changes that took place within Rosemead: In 1984 annexed by Arroyo Grande Station opened on what had been closed since 1951 when Arroyo Grande Railroad bought all assets of Western Railway Company which served Rosemead before being sold to IRR (the old Southern Pacific Railroad). Together they formed "Arroyo Grande Unified School District". This change made for annexation into one entity along with other annexations throughout southeastern San Gabriel Valley including Fullerton and Monrovia which also came about because IRR built trackage between these two municipalities making them suburbs instead of villages or towns . There has been sporadic anti-incorporation activism over time but no major incidents have taken place so far... effectively local government works best within its own boundaries
Rosemead was founded in 1851 by John and Sally Green. It became a town in 1872 when it was annexed to Pasadena.
