By 1865, much of what is now Rosemead had been developed as a small farming community with about fifty-five residents. In that year, two factors led to population growth: 1) gold discoveries were occurring all over California and 2) more people were moving into the area because of cheap land prices. By 1870, there were over one hundred residents living in Rosemead. Between 1850 and 1870, roses began to be grown at nearby Mount San Jacinto Park which provided an excellent location for harvesting these flowers due to their high yields. Roses have continued to be grown here ever since and are now an important part of local culture and economy
