The town is named after Rosemead Farmstead which was first settled in 1853 by George and Anna Mason. The Masons were of English descent and their farmstead became known as Meadowlands due to its location on the former Meadowlands Railroad right-of-way that ran through the town. Rosemead was incorporated as a city on December 9, 1911. The original name of the city was Donnerville until it changed to Rosemead because of objections from other towns in Kern County who felt they had been given an unfairly advantageous name. The economy of Rosemead is based primarily on agriculture with some light manufacturing and services such as accounting and real estate businesses also present. A number of large institutions have their headquarters here including UC Berkeley, Google Inc., and John Deere Co.. There are two high schools; Donner Valley High School and Antelope Valley Jr./Sr High School which both offer classes for elementary students through senior year as well as college preparatory programs for middle schoolers through post-secondary students.

The first residents of what is now Rosemead were Russian immigrants who arrived in 1879 from Tver, Russia. Captain John A. Rose landed at Long Beach on July 22nd with his family and began construction of their home on Rancho Santa Anita where they would live until 1889 when they sold the land back to John A. Rose Jr.. In 1886 Captain John A. Rose married Elizabeth Sauerbach and started farming near their new home on Rancho Santa Anita During this time period there were many changes happening around Los Angeles County that have had an impact on both the community located around them and those living closer to it including: -- The Gold Rush Period: This was a time when cities such as San Francisco grew rapidly due to gold being discovered in California -- Railroads Developed: With railroads coming into existence throughout California things changed dramatically including how goods were transported between different parts of the state -- Growth steady but not exponential: As industry increased so did population growth throughout most of Southern California however density decreased slightly around Rosemead until about 1950s when it began increasing again slowly but steadily becoming more densely populated until gentrification took hold
