Rosemead, California is a small town in the Simi Valley region of Ventura County, California. The population was 7,402 at the 2010 census. It is located in the south-central part of Ventura County on Interstate 15 and its namesake street is named for Rosemead Road. The area that would become Rosemead was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. Rancho San Vicente de la Paloma was granted to Francisco Reyes in 1838, and it became a cattle ranch. The name "Rossead," meaning white poppy or rose bush, was given to the community by postmaster George Wickersham in 1875 because of the high percentage of roses grown there. The First National Bank opened its doors on Main Street in 1893. At that time, it was one of only a few banks west of San Francisco open to farmers and ranchers who sold their produce directly to consumers rather than through local merchants and bankers. In 1916, when Rosemead's main shopping center opened with 106 stores and three movie theaters, it became known as "the most shopping town east of Los Angeles." In 1951, when I-15 came into being as a national highway system, Rossead became part of Southern California's first intercity freeway network. The freeway helped revive downtown Rossead businesses such as Jaffa Bakers & Judaica and Allied Baking Supplies while also connecting new development areas such as Thousand Oaks and Camarillo with Rossead's old core business district.
