The history of Rosemead, California's police department is long and varied. The department was first organized on May 7, 1881 when two officers from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department were assigned to patrol the town. The department grew rapidly and by 1905 there were ten officers in service. In 1912, a pavilion was built for the department and in 1937 a new station was built. In 1951, an ambulance was purchased and dedicated to the force. On December 17, 1957, a new building was dedication for the detective bureau which soon became one of Rosemead's most popular attractions for visitors. A $1 million gift from Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jaffe funded construction of a new substation located at 6000 Sutter Street in 1984 which doubled the number of traffic lights in town. During the 1990s,Rosemead began to experience budget shortfalls and as a result disbanded its bomb squad unit effective January 1st 1998 effective with then Capt David Wiegand taking command of that unit instead In 2002-2003 Captain Tom Kappenberger took command of this unit again with mixed results until he retired on July 16th 2003 after over 10 years service having made many arrests including one that led to felony charges against then Mayor Dianne Feinstein It is currently being operated out of an old storage shed on state Route 51 near mile post 41
