Rosemead is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. It lies on the eastern border of the city of Bakersfield, and was once part of that city. Rosemead is located near the Bakersfield Airport. The population was 2 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Kern County was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. He named it San Miguel de la Salle after Saint Michael the Archangel. In 1873, John Sutter discovered land in what is now Kern County and named it for his friend and fellow settler James Wolkowicz (1821-1902). In 1879, a group of Mexican citizens from Tulare founded Rancho Luna near present-day Rosemead. This rancho served as a crossing point for wagon trains traveling between Tulare and Bakersfield; cattle were driven overland to Ranchero Valley from here. At one time there were several businesses in town—the post office (1881), hotel (1893), bakery (1900), grocery store(1905), men's club (1920), women's club (1925)—but they have all closed down or been demolished since the early 21st century. Rancho Luna still stands today on a piece of property within Rosemead boundaries. In 1916, an oil well was drilled by Standard Oil Company off of present-day Rosemead Boulevard; this well produced natural gas which formed the basis for Southern California Gas Company's business ventures east of Los Angeles proper beginning in 1918 until its acquisition by ChevronTexaco in 1984 Rancho Luna also became home to Don Kates' Roseseed Nursery during World War II because local residents had some production rights to produce Victory gardens needed for Operation Crossroads munitions shipments from inland facilities along I-5 outside downtown LA . Afterward roses were no longer grown there but rather nearby Larkins Orchards remained active through most of the late 20th century before finally closing their doors due to poor health prospects in 2006 .. In recent years development has taken place around town center with several new restaurants/bars/cafeterias/flowershops opening up while old structures such as hotels are being renovated or replaced.. glassblowing studios have popped up across town providing opportunities for creative artisans.. Several streets have been renamed after people or organizations who had an impact on Kern County history including José Gomez Boulevard honoring ranchers José Gomez and Vicente Guerrero when they led successful campaigns against water pollution control measures imposed by then Governor Jerry Brown; Antonio Rubio Boulevard in honor of rancher Antonio Rubio who fought surface water recharge projects managed by then county Supervisor Donald Porras ; Gertrude Chavez Blvd honors both Gertrude Chavez, wife of Chico Chavez who opposed major oil drilling operations adjacent to their home during these same years usurping public access beach front properties considered agricultural values .. etc
