Roseville is a city located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 41,793 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Roseville was founded in 1879 by George H. Nelson and Adolphus Beaumont as a small settlement on the east side of Oroville Creek near present-day City Hall and Dominguez Hills Park. The Roseville and surrounding communities of California were founded in 1853 by Major George C. Smith from Oregon. The town is named for the rosebush that was first grown there. In 1857, the town was named for General Pershing, who had won a victory over Mexican troops at the Battle of Buena Vista. The town became a County seat in 1889 and has since been renamed four times- Roseville in 1907, Salinas in 1911, San Bernardino in 1913 and Riverside in 1965. The discovery of gold in California led to increased population growth throughout the state and into what is now Central Valley towns like Sacramento and Fresno. However, while these cities experienced rapid growth, they did not have similar fortunes when it came to infrastructure or services such as schools or health care. This was due largely to the fact that Sacramento and Fresno were respectively located on state-owned land outside of any municipality’s jurisdiction. Because these larger city centers were not served by local roads or public transportation, they saw their populations decline relative to their rural counterparts during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In response to this situation, several municipalities formed themselves as independent cities within California during the mid-19th century including Roseville, Livermore (founded 1865), Antioch (1868), Gilroy (1870), Redding (1872), Tracy (1875) and Newark (1876). These new municipalities enjoyed better infrastructure such as water supplies and schools but also faced opposition from wealthier residents who felt that their own autonomy should be protected. Ultimately, however, these efforts failed to bring about comprehensive change within Californian society until after World War II when federal assistance made municipal governments more effective at serving citizens24
In 1853, the United States acquired Oregon from France. The area now known as California was added to the Union in 1859. In 1866, the Central Pacific Railroad company built a line from Stockton to Sacramento. The route passed through Roseville and other towns on its way north.
