Roseville is a small town in Alameda County, California, in the United States. The population was 18,724 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th most populous city in Contra Costa County and the second most populous city in San Francisco Bay Area after San Francisco. The first European to visit Roseville was Captain James Cook on his way back from Tahiti on October 14, 1769. He named it Pascua Maru after one of his stores ashore there. In 1836, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort here and started a cattle drive that would cross the US-Canada border. When he died in 1849 his son Humboldt set out to found Stanford University at Roseville's where he landed on November 16, 1836 with twenty men and five cannons. In 1850–51 Augustus Wright built a sawmill and gristmill near present day Eastshore Drive and Sunnyside Avenue; this mill crossed McClintock Creek which later became part of Interstate 80 east of town. The Wright family continued to operate their mills until 1914 when they sold them to J & H Cramer who also operated them for many years as a power plant until they closed down in 1984 due to pollution concerns. A post office was established at Roseville in 1886, but stopped operation because of spammers using the name "Roses". A new post office opened at Southside Drive (now Sunrise Highway) following World War II when all mail stoped being delivered through Oakland because of Japanese bombing raids during that war which destroyed many homes throughout Northern California including Roseville In 1951 an expressway called I-880 was built between Oakland and Hayward cutting off much of what used to be Roses town center; this area now includes much high-density housing developments such as Holly Hills Estates The population has grown rapidly over recent decades with more people moving into the city limits since I-580 was constructed making it one of the fastest growing cities within Contra Costa County . The first people to arrive in what is now Roseville were the Costanos and they camped on the east side of the Sacramento River between 1847 and 1851. For many years, Roseville was known as "The Desert City". In1893, three brothers bought an isolated piece of land that would become downtown Roseville from George Hearn for $4 per acre (!!). Three years later, they founded the Central Pacific Railroad and developed it into one of Northern California's most prosperous cities. In 1906, Mayor John A. Lowenthal dedicated a garden in honor of his predecessor Robb Kelleher who had served as mayor for thirteen terms before retiring at age seventy-four. Kelleher was also a pioneer in Roseville's water fluoridation program; his initiative became one of the first such programs in Northern California. Today, part of downtownRoseville is designated as Mayor John Lowenthal Park. One important Rosevillians throughout history have been its firefighters: starting with Captain Ralph Sabin who worked at Station No. 1 on Donner Pass Road back when all firefighting services were provided by horseback riders; going on to Chief Tom Atkins who led Engine Co., 10th Battalion until his retirement in 1984; Lieutenant Gene Herndon who commanded Company C from 1974 until he retired four years ago; First Sergeant Jerry Whitehurst whose Company I manned Engine Co., 2d Battalion from 1978 until his death recently – these men and more are commemorated by numerous plaques throughout downtownRoseville
