It lies on the east side of San Francisco Bay and has a permanent waterfront presence because of its location near Sacramento. Roseville is a city located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Inyo County and its largest community by land area. The first European to see Roseville was José Altamira on October 7, 1827 during his trip from Sacramento to Los Angeles. He named it after the rosebushes that he saw near the town of San Bernardino. In 1851, Captain John C. Frémont visited Roseville while on his way southward across America and named it for Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne's home in England where he had been stationed as an officer with General Howard's 1st Cavalry Division during the Mexican-American War. Hawthorne had fought against Mexico and now resided in Pasadena. A post office called "Rosesville" was established at this location on November 15, 1851, and remained in operation until January 6, 1893. The name of the town changed from "Rosesville" to "Rosette" on February 3rd of that year pursuant to Assembly Bill No. 379 (now Chapter 581 et seq.).
