Roseville is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 41,527 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by population. The name of the city comes from nearby Rose Bayou and other waterways. In 1866, Major General George Sutter founded Rancho San Antonio de las Pulgas (later to become Roseville) on land grant from Baron von Stein in retaliation for Sutter's expulsion of Native Americans from his property near Stockton. The first permanent settler in what would become Roseville was James Fenton who arrived on horseback on December 5, 1868. He and his family named their new rancho after President Andrew Johnson's sister-in-law Jemima Giddings Fenton (1815–1884). James Fenton was one of several men who were rewarded for their bravery during the Mexican–American War with land grants that included portions of present-day Contra Costa County. In 1876 Jens Jensen started a sawmill and gristmill at what is now Dairy Rd/Hwy 66 west of town along the river bank where he built dams to control water levels so that his mills could run year round without fear of floods. The demand for flour led to increased shipping activity downriver which also generated additional jobs at Jensen's mills; these days there are still many reminders of this period including an old millrace known as "Jensen's Rapids". Heldrake Coal & Coke Company opened its mines near what is now Rheem Ave/Folsom St., just east of town in 1886 and manufactured bricks and tiles before closing down in 1906 The City Council adopted resolutions calling for annexation by Berkeley because it had a population twice that of Roseville then only 1,500 people lived within two miles (3 km) of either side of town; but nobuilt annexation occurred until 1912 when voters passed Measure T making Roseville an incorporated city with all powers granted to the City Council exceptfor fire protection and zoning authority

Roseville is a town located in Kern County, California. The population was 68 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Roseville began with the arrival of Spanish settlers in 1769. At that time, there were only a few hundred people living in what is now Roseville. The first post office was established in 1854 and it served as the junction for two wagon trails leading to Sacramento and Mulholland City. In 1875, the town name was changed to honor Hilda de la Cruz Rose, who had been an early settler and daughter of Governor Manuel Nieto of California. In 1886, work began on building the railroad through Kern County and by 1890, Roseville had become one of the most important towns along that line. By 1915, when World War I started, local businesses had turned out over 1 million pieces of munitions for the war effort alone. After hostilities ended in 1918, many people returned to their normal lives but some remained behind to help build new homes and businesses around town during those years.
