In the days and weeks leading up to the war, the Air National Guard had a number of tasks to complete. On December 8th, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which activated the military forces of America. This order called for all citizens of America to report to their local military units any males over 18 years old who could provide information about fighting in enemy territory. The first task that the Air National Guard took on was providing food and supplies to troops stationed in Hawaii and Guam. On December 13th, 1941, just two days after Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan, members of the 1st Battalion (Hickam) were ordered to embark on a bomber plane headed for Los Angeles. It was during this time that they were informed that they would be deployed throughout California as part of General Douglas MacArthur's Asia-Pacific Area Command (APAC). Hickam squadron remained at Alameda Municipal Airport until September 1945 when it moved its operations out of California altogether and became an air force installation serving as a wing headquarters for Andersen Air Force Base

All told it looks much like it did more than 100 years ago when Jno Pahoehoe documented his journey from exploration party through abortive mission to establish permanent Western settlement here: A big ole' hodgepodge with lots of promise but no streetlights!
