In 1851, the navy set up a small naval base at Point Conception and started importing supplies from England. This led to the establishment of a military post on Fort Yuma in 1852. In 1860, three cannons were imported from France and installed at Fort Mason in Sacramento. The fort served as an artillery depot for the army until 1865 when it was disbanded. In 1865, the navy set up its own naval station at Sacramento which became home to the now defunct Coast Guard Station Sacramento. In 1868, General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived in California with his forces and began building what would become known as Sherman’s Rancho Bernardo near present-day Petaluma. After driving out many of the Mexican settlers living in this area, Sherman decided to establish an Army Post there in order to better defend his land against future invasions by Mexico. The post was named after him and it served as an artillery depot until 1870 when it was decommissioned and replaced by a new barracks complex called Fort Mason which still stands today. During World War II, Sacramento played host to one of America’s largest airfields during Operation Overlord; it also saw heavy use during World War II as a training ground for American troops who would go on to fight in Europe and Japan

Sacramento is a city in Northern California, located on the Sacramento River. It is the capital of the state of California and has been the seat of government for more than 50 years. The population was 1,026,824 as of December 2017. The area that would become Sacramento was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1846, it became part of Mexico after its independence from Spain. United States military forces occupied it during World War II until 1945 when it returned to Mexican hands. On January 29, 1850, about 10 days after Mexican President Juan Bautista Alvarado announced his candidacy for president at Monterey Bay Naval Station, American Commodore John C. Fremont named Sacramento as Californias new provisional capital. In 1855–1857, while Californias capital was under consideration at Monterey Bay Naval Station, marshal general George Armistead built and manned an arsenal at what is now downtown Sacramento to supply timber buyers with cannons needed to suppress Indian uprisings in Northern California during the Gold Rush period (1848-56). The Jefferson Building (now First Congregational Parish Church) was erected between 1858 and 1860 as a meeting hall for armory employees and their employers; it served as such until 1865 when a new building was erected on State Street across from where we now have our City Hall Plaza buildings sit today! A few months later James Kweller arrived in town from Oregon with news that gold had been discovered near Sutter’s Mill east of town – this led to great excitement throughout all sections of North America! Unfortunately for everyone involved (including Kweller), no gold ever came out of Sutter’s Mill so attention turned back to Sacramento soon thereafter! The old armory building still stands adjacent to 2nd & G Streets today waiting to be consumed by redevelopment but it offers a wonderful view down onto downtown which includes many fine old buildings including: Bank of America Tower (1930), The Ritz-Carlton Hotel (1920), etc. On November 7th 1861 local residents made their way into City Hall Plaza opposite 2nd & G Streets where they inaugurated Mayor Samuel Seward with much fanfare before adjourning business for Thanksgiving weekend! For many years afterwards City Hall Plaza served as both City Hall and TownHall while various other buildings were constructed nearby including: The Masonic Temple (1909), blocks away on Anacapa Boulevard now home to JW Marriott hotel (!), Andover Road Baptist Church (1910), etc….. Today there are 4 main plaza buildings within walking distance each other with additional smaller structures scattered around…. This complex has undergone some major renovations over the years but never loses its “Olde SacTowne charm”!!!!!
