Grant became the 24th President of the United States and announced his plans to make Sacramento the new national capital. In the Middle Ages, coffee became a favorite drink of King John II of England because he liked to stop at monastery breweries while on his travels. Coffee then spread to Spain where it formed part of the royal diet. In Vienna, Austria, Ottaviano da Novellara began making espresso machines in 1559 which permitted him to produce high-quality coffee at home. By 1795, two brothers had opened a small café called L’Atelier de la Caffeine in Paris which became one of the most famous tourist destinations in France for its unique coffees and service. In 1857, Swiss artist Bernhard Taubert created a series of drawings entitled “Coffee Stands” that depicted cafes around the world with their associated roastings and serving methods. These works introduced people to different types of roasted coffee and helped keep coffee as an artisanal beverage separate from industrial production.

It is located on the north bank of the Sacramento River between San Francisco and Oakland to its east and east side are Lake Oroville and Elk Grove Placer Valley to its west. The city covers an area of 6 square miles (15 km2). The first permanent settlement in what is now Sacramento County was at Yuba Point on the southern shore of Lake Oroville, by Captain George Francis Hopper, who named it for St. Sacrament's Cathedral in London after his patron saint. After gold was discovered nearby in 1859, various settlements were established along both sides of the river before General Antonio José de Salinas founded Petaluma Bay City on October 14, 1861, which became Sacramento on February 26, 1864. In 1872–1873 Grant Wood lived near Potrero Hill; he bought land there in 1874 from Nicolaas Janssens and built his large home there called "Woodland Park".
