Today, the Coast Guard operates in more than 100 countries around the world. The service was established in 1915 as part of the US Navy. To commemorate its 125th anniversary, the Coast Guard has created a unique gift history in Sacramento, California. In 1915, the US Navy placed an order for 1,000 lifejackets from George Meinig and Son Ltd. of London. The first batch arrived in May 1916 and were distributed to members of the military service across America. The gifts were meant as morale boosters and were quickly appreciated by those who received them. The second batch of lifejackets arrived in December 1916 and were distributed to members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in California. This group was later renamed the Coast Guard Reserve during World War II when marine patrol became a key function of the coast guard. The Coast Guard Gift Shop opened on October 15th, 1917 at 5th & Mission Streets in downtown Sacramento with 30 pieces of American made art deco jewelry designed by Captains Jock Hogg and John Larkin Jr.. During WWII, many items such as radios and watches were gifted to coastal guards along with food rations for troops stationed overseas. After WWII ended, many items donated by civilians (such as furniture) or government agencies (such as vehicles) turned into gifts for coast guard personnel throughout California’s inland communities including Benicia(1948), Stockton(1951), Visalia(1952), Murphys Point(1957), Ukiah(1963), Santa Cruz County(1968), Mendocino County(1970) and Yolo County (1981). A new gift history was born when donations from individuals ceased after 1984 when state law forbids any type of donation from being given to a state agency without express written consent from all party involved including elected officials- this continues today with only oral donations allowed at present time!
