There is no one definitive account of what started as maga coffee in Sacramento, California. However, the first documented mention of this coffee variety can be found in 1892 when a German-born entrepreneur named Gustavus Maga set up a small business selling coffee beans from his farm near Lake Merritt. Maga Coffee was first brewed at the Guggenheim Hotel in Sacramento by French-born restaurateur and hotelier Georges Debreczeny in 1921. The famous restaurant served up unique blends of European and American coffees that drew customers from around the region. In the early 1970s, Mr. Maga’s son took over the restaurant business and continued to serve up world-class coffees until his death in 1984. After Georges Debreczeny’s death, his son, Pierre Debreczeny, continued running the Guggenheim Hotel into the 1990s before it closed its doors for good in 2002. In recent years, maga coffee has become well known throughout Northern California due to its popularity among aficionados of Ethiopian and Arabic-bred roasts. In recent years, many cafes across Northern California have begun serving up quality Ethiopian and Arabic-bred maga coffee on their menus as an homage to Mr. Maga and his legacy.
Sacramento is a city located in the state of California, United States. The population was estimated to be 1,550,000 as of 2019. It is the capital of Sacramento County and the most populous city in Northern California. Founded by Californio pioneers in 1849 as part of Rancho San Joaquin, Sacramento became an important port for goods from the Gold Rush and later became a center for education and industry. In 2018, it was named one of the "10 Best Cities to Live In" by Forbes magazine. The history of Sacramento began with Spanish colonists who founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on April 25, 1769. The original mission site was near present-day Lake Merritt. A second mission operated at Rancho Santiago de los Padres between 1824 and 1828; this latter mission served as the first permanent settlement in what would become Sacramento County. On July 8, 1850, following Mexican War victory over American forces at Alamo Heights, Mexico ceded all its holdings east of Umatilla Creek to America through Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty ended the Mexican–American War and granted land west of cottonwood Creek to Americans under agreement that Mexico would not settle any more claims west than Texas’ current border (which then extended south to include parts of today’s Riverside County). In 1851 Francis Drake bought 5 leagues (about 12 square miles) northwest corner lot in present-day northeast Sacramento from Antonio Lopez for $1 ($40 per acre). On December 12th same year Drake built Fort Point onDigital Rock ridge north shore of Elk River about 3/4 mi SE his ranch house now known as "Drake's Fort". A few years later, gold was discovered at Sutter Folsom and by 1850, Sacramento had become an important trading center for miners across Western United States due to its fertile soil and proximity to mines in Gold Rush days. In 1856, Congregationalist minister Elijah Price built Christ Church on First Street between Geary and Market Streets as a staging area for immigrants coming through Yolo County on their way northward towards Seattle via Stockton or Central Valley wagon trains laden with goods such as grain, hides and feathers; these sojourners would stay until they could find better lodgings or passage back home across the Pacific Ocean
