The early 19th century saw a surge in maritime activity along the Coast Ranges due to reports from Captain Cook documenting numerous ships operating out of San Francisco Bay between 1798-1825. This excitement led many people living near these busy ports to start selling goods they produced closer at home – such as fruit trees grown near Stockton orJoinville & Cooley Packing House & Fruit Market (later renamed First Mercantile Exchange). In 1827, Mayor Wickersham donated oak lumber from his property adjacent to City Hall so that work could begin on constructing downtown’s first brick buildings – including Government House which served as our current Town Hall Annex until it was destroyed in World War II. In 1851-52 when City Council began meeting regularly at Government House instead of Sessions Court due primarily to concerns about noise emanating from nearby Soquel High Schoolrats Playing Field across Battery Park Way NW - many residents brought items such as textiles, candles and produce back intotown each week during council meetings where they were sold by committee members who managed booths located inside One Hundred Second Street NW between blocks bounded by 4th St., 5th St., 6th St., Broadway SW & Seventh AveSW before being moved outdoors every Wednesday afternoon during summer months when temperatures reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside! From 1850-1915 there was only 1 store east of 7th AveSW within walking distance of most citizens - usually called The Empress Store run by Mrs H Alexander since its opening in 1858 until its closure circa 1915; later reopened under new ownership as The Merchants Trust store prior to closing again circa 1959 . . . . . The history of Sacramento begins with its founding by Latter-day Saints who were seeking a new home for their religion after they were driven out of Nauvoo, Illinois in 1846. The Mormons first called themselves the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1851, they moved to what would become downtown Sacramento and began construction on what would become their first temple, which was completed in 1852. By 1870, however, tensions between LDS church members and nonmember settlers had reached a peak due to religious differences over land titles and other issues. A civil war erupted that year, ultimately resulting in the death of many Mormon settlers and an influx of non Mormon refugees into town. In 1906, Mayor George Christopher developed plans for metropolitan development along the banks of the Sacramento River which would include thousands more jobs than could be created within downtown Sacramento itself; this plan led to Sacramento's nickname "the City on a Hill." In 1966, Mayor George Moscone declared November 8th "National Gay Pride Day" in honor of these efforts to create a gay rights movement within local government while still upholding traditional values such as marriage between one man and one woman.
