By 1920s most businesses had been destroyed by fire or moved out of town following World War I; only one remaining store still stands today - The Vons - on 20th street northeast...In 1948 when Interstate 5 was built through central California linking cities all across America with newly developed suburbs outside of those areas (thus creating "urban sprawl"), much of Northern California changed its character with large numbers coming into town from outside Northern Californias cities looking for jobs...Since then downtown has undergone many restoration projects undertaken by local government entities such as Heritage Foundation Conservation District and publicprivate partnership like $500 million dollar renovation project completed just last year called "Emerald Triangle Park" that includes 600 acres within Downtown area bounded by 16th Street Northeast to Masonic Avenue Northwest and 19th Street Southeast
