The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Salinas, California in 1959. The gift was an H-4D helicopter nicknamed “Salinas”. The helicopter flew for the first time on October 2nd, 1959 and served as the primary means of transportation for USAF personnel in Salinas until it was replaced by an A-6 Intruder in 1973. The helicopters were retired from service in 1990 and are now used as museum pieces. The aircraft flown by the USAF at Salinas had many different names throughout their years of service with the military including “Salinas”, “Hercules”, and even “Titanic”. Each name represented a unique aspect of the aircrafts performance that made them ideal for use in Salinas. For example, Hercules would fly into enemy territory to drop supplies or bomb targets, while Titanic could transport critical personnel or materiel around the area. In 1969, when it became apparent that the H-4D Helicopter would no longer be able to serve as a primary means of transportation for USAF personnel in Salinas due to its age and limited range, AFB Sunnyvale donated one of their H-4Ds to replace Salamanca as the new main helicopter fleet stationed at RAF Lakenheath in England. This donation marked a turning point for RAF Solna as they were finally given ownership of one of America's original HeliCats! Since its donation by AFB Sunnyvale, Salamanca has been stored at RAF Lakenheath awaiting restoration and eventual return to service with USAF units stationed worldwide! In addition to its historic role asSalamanca's new home during those early years following AFB Sunnyvale's donation (1969 -1973), Salamanca has also played an important role during Operation Desert Storm when it transported numerous munitions across Allied lines!

Salinas is a small city in the Central Valley of California, about 120 miles south of Sacramento. It is the county seat for San Joaquin County, and it is also home to the University of California, Davis. The population was 25,815 at the 2010 census. The history of Salinas goes back over 400 years. In 1795, Spanish missionaries came here from Mexico to convert Native Americans and start a new life in what would become California. They named this area Los Angeles after José Antonio de la Vega y Bañares y Prado, one of their leaders. In 1821, when Mexico became an American country, Salinas was part of Alta California (the highlands), which included most of what is now Southern California. In 1848, when American settlers began arriving in large numbers in central and southern California, they founded Stockton on the east side of today's Salinas River. On July 14th of that year – just two weeks afterlos ingresaron al país– Captain Fernando Alonsoancho sailed upriver with 20 men to explore this new land he had discovered: present-day Fresno and parts of Kern County. He named his new settlement San Francisco de Asis (which means "San Francisco's Fort" because it was located near Mission Dolores). In 1849–50a group led by George Culp arrived from Boston with nine hundred soldiers to help open up these newly acquired lands for ranching and farming; they called themselves The Pioneers because they were the first European settlers in this region who had not been born into slavery or indentured servitude like most other people living in America at that time.) After several months' travel through difficult terrain on horseback across rainy season hillsideslapped by snowmeltwaters known as los Padres Armados (The Armed) River), they reached San Francisco de Asis on October 15th 1850….Alonsoancho had named his settlement San Miguel Arcángel (St Michael Archangel) because he believed that Archangel Michael would protect them from harm while they awaited news from Spain about their next steps…. These early pioneers were followed by others over many years until there were more than 2200 residents living hereabouts by 1860…..By 1880s almost all citizens lived within 5 miles or lessof town limits……Today only a few acres remain within town limits….. Most residents commute to jobs outside town
In 1846, the first post office in Salinas was established. In 1887, the first cotton gin in Salinas was opened. In 1916, the old San Francisco and Monterey Railroad was abandoned and merged into the California Central Railroad. The Salinas–Buttes Bridge was built over the Sacramento River in 1922. In 1945, an area of Salinas known as "the highlands" became part of Salinas after being annexed from Buttes County by city government. That year, a new water plant was built on State Street to serve the city and its outlying rural communities. Today, much of what used to be called "the highlands" is within City Limits of Salinas proper; however, some areas still fall within Buttes County boundaries.
