The Salinas, California Army National Guard has been deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom since September 11th, 2001. The guard has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. In fiscal year 2017, the army deployed a total of 4,362 soldiers and airmen. These troops are stationed in 45 states and Puerto Rico.1 The Salinas National Guard was first organized on October 25th, 1920 as the San Francisco County Sheriff's Department Militia. On November 15th of that year, the militia became part of the California National Guard when it was ratified by the state legislature.2 The militia initially consisted of men from San Francisco and other counties within Northern California. It was not until 1930 that soldiers from across the state were brought together to form a battalion under command of Major General John Aherns3 In 1940-1941, members of the military police detachment from Santa Clara County traveled to Japan to assist local forces during World War II. Upon their return home they reported their findings to then Lieutenant Colonel John Sutter4 who organized what would become known as "the Golden Gate Division"5 which patrolled San Francisco Bay Bridge and other major arteries throughout Marin County6 After World War II ended there was a hiatus in unit organization until 1951 when Colonel Edwin Ladd7 created an Infantry Battalion which flew combat missions over North Vietnam8 . Since its inception there have been numerous changes to battalion composition including: (1) separation into artillery companies; (2) conversion into light infantry battalions; (3) designation as an airborne brigade Combat Team;9 (4) activation for duty at bases outside of metropolitan areas10 ;11 (5) merger with Calaveras County Troopers who had been mobilized for Desert Storm12 . Finally activated on September 1st 1973 as Republic No. 6 Infantry Battalion13 these units continue this present-day deployable structure composed primarily of veteran reservists14

The Salinas Valley Legion is a volunteer organization of the California Army National Guard. The Legion was activated on November 17, 1942 as the Salinas Valley Infantry Battalion. It was redesignated on November 17, 1948 as the 1st Battalion, California Army National Guard. The battalion was inactivated on September 15, 1951 at Fort Mason. On October 8, 1956 it was reactivated at Camp Pendleton and redesignated as the 7th Battalion, California Army National Guard. The battalion was inactivated again on February 9, 1959 at Fort Irwin. On July 1, 1966 it re-designated as the 3rd Battalion (California), California Army National Guard and moved to Monterey County from San Luis Obispo County. The battalion served in Desert Storm from December 18 to January 5, 1991 and symbolically returned to active duty on February 6th with its colors flying over Ft Ord Naval Base Harbor Yard after being honorably discharged by United States Marine Corps General James Mattis USMC Commander of Marine Forces Pacific Command
Salinas, California is a town located in Monterey County, California. The population was 15,814 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Salinas Valley named after it and its sister city of Hollister. The Monterey Peninsula was first settled by Native Americans around 4000 BC. In 1835, American gold miners discovered gold and silver in the Salinas Valley and began to explore for more deposits. Mining operations began in 1851 and continued until 1893 when production ceased because of over-the-counter prices that were set byounce merchants rather than government controls on mining values. In 1892, General George Custer's forces fought their way through Paso Robles Pass into San Francisco Bay and encountered Indian warriors who killed many American soldiers before Custer's retreat from Californias largest battle ever won against an opposing force. As a result of this event, General Crocker ordered his troops not to stop at Salinas River but continue on down the Sacramento River to Fort Yuma where they would load up with supplies for the return trip upriver. The town was platted in 1894 by Jens Christensen as part of a larger plan called Rancho Santa Fe y Salinas which included eight townships: Adobe Hills, Baker Valley, Bernal Heights/Hollister Heights/Atascadero Heights/Laguna Hills/Rosario Park (now Willow Glen), Pagosa Springs (now Fruitvale Village), Pismo Beach (now Half Moon Bay) and Tejon Canyon (Now Cathedral City). The incorporation of Salinas occurred on November 12th 1915 using process called "banking" which allowed small businesses with $10 or less in assets to file for incorporation without going through an election as had been done previously. At first all annexation applications were rejected because there wasn't enough property within the limits of what would becomeSalinas County; however when it became clear that much land had been lost due to firefighting efforts during World War I including most of downtown Salinas new homes were erected primarilydatacenter type buildings such as churches, post office annexes etc.– some still standing today– annexation proceeded apace with 5% formally approved parcels receiving official recognition from county officials only after extensive subdivision took place prior thereto carrying out platting plans prepared by engineers licensed by state Board of Land Commissioners A local group known as "Pioneers" actively promoted Irrigation District No 1 westward extensions into present day Hollister Hills area originally reported east side but never surveyed or platied due lack thereof knowledge then current location indicated although original intention appears quite uncertain mapmakers erred upon assumption this should be intervening ridgeline between Cottonwood Flat Creek watershed & valley floor instead along creek bed surface

Salinas, California is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of southern California. The population was 147,795 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the San Joaquin Valley and second most populous in total area after Fresno. Salinas grew out of small villages on Hwy 36 near what is now Salinas City and adjoined by Rancho Seco to the east on December 21, 1853 when three Mexican landowners agreed to sell land to become part of an Anglo-American settlement. On July 16, 1855, a group of American miners who had been prospecting for gold along Hwy 36 discovered saltpeter ore worth $100 per ton from a vein that extended into parts of today’s Butte County and Alameda County. This led directly to the founding of Salinas as a town on December 21st with Captain Walter Purdy as its first mayor. Salinas became an important center during World War II due to its location at nearby Monterey Bay Naval Air Station (now Moffett Field) and its naval stores shipyards which built aircraft carriers USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Lexington (CV-14), USS Yorktown (CV-11) and USS Shangri La (CVA-23). In 1945, Post Office Manager A.H. Summers appointed Clarence Wolk as postmaster because no one else wanted it in town; Wolk successfully lobbied for it to be included in the new post office district that same year – which still includes much of downtown Salinas today! After World War II ended, many factories closed down but SALINAS CONTINUED TO GROW AS A BUSINESS CITY WITH THE OPENING OF NEW FOUNDINGS such as Apple Incorporated in 1984 and Levi Strauss & Co., LLP in 1990! Today, there are over 100 businesses operating within downtown Salinas while smaller businesses are spread throughout nearly every block or alleyway!
The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Salinas County were the Spanish in the 17th century. The area was part of Alta California, and Francisco Vallejo explored it in 1634. In 1827, Salinas became part of Mexico when the United States acquired California. Mexican land grants continued to be given until 1846, when California was won by the U.S. In 1848, Mexico ceded San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties to the US as well as all of present-day Santa Cruz County.
