Salinas is a small city located in the counties of Monterey and San Joaquin, about an hour's drive from Sacramento. It was founded in 1874 by Antonio Salinas, one of the first European settlers in California. After years of Acreage Farming, Mining and Business growth, Salinas became a major center for industry and commerce during the late 19th century. The city experienced significant growth during World War II as it became a manufacturing center for aircraft parts and ammunition. In recent decades, Salinas has become known for its arts and culture scene, with many popular restaurants and nightlife options.
As of the 2000 census, Salinas had a population of 84,914. The city is located in Monterey County and is bordered by the counties of Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito. In 1846, when California became a United States territory, Salinas was part of the Rancho San Francisco de la Nación grant to José Joaquín Cámpora. In 1868, the rancho was sold to Fernando Pacheco and his brother-in-law Jesus Arce for $10,000. Pacheco began building what would become the first commercial building in Salinas – a store called Frontera on First Street in 1876. In 1886, Pacheco's son-in-law Ricardo Flores obtained title to the property from his father-in-law Pacheco. The Flores family built more than 20 buildings in Salinas before selling most of them off in 1916 to José María Castro and others for $5 million. During World War II (1939–45), much of what is now downtown Salinas was used as an airfield by bomber groups based at nearby Tulare Airport. The current incarnation of downtown Salinas began developing around 1946 when businessman Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller donated land for development near then-Palo Alto High School; today's Rockefeller Plaza contains many historical artifacts from its construction including ballroom flooring and marble staircases that lead up to it from First Street. Other early developers included Jerald Wolk (founder/owner of Western Electric Company) and former Stanford University presidentzon Allan Bloom who donated land adjacent to then-University Park Elementary School which still stands today as one of Downtown Salinas' key landmarks.
