Following Mexican Independence from Spain on October 26th 1850 A group including José Joaquín Herrera y Soto organized what would become known as La Unión Civil Mexicana (UCM) which aimed to overthrow President Manuel Micheltorena’s rule; however this effort failed due largely to lack of support among local Indian tribes who saw UCM as a threat to their power base. As a result of these failures UCM disbanded within two years with many members moving westward into Nevada Territory where they founded another organization known as Los Angeles Unionist Party (LUP). Upon experiencing problems with food supplies during its brief existence LUP merged with UCM on December 15th 1850 becoming known as Republican National Committee (RNC).
