Salinas, California is a town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Salinas is part of the Paso Robles–Napa Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site of present-day Salinas was first occupied by Native Americans in Pre-European times. In 1821, Mission San Francisco de Asís (founded in 1776) and Mission Santa Cruz were founded in what is now Salinas; both missions were abandoned in 1842. The townsite was platted on March 14, 1865 by John Sutter for Wm. Hutton & Co., merchants from Sacramento who had come to make a wharf on the Salinas River available for navigation. In 1886, an act of the California Legislature changed the name from "Asís" to "Salinas". The name honors José María Salina y Gómez whose Donation land grant helped create Rancho Seco and Rancho Monterey within Salinas's boundaries; as well as his wife Agnes de la Garza y Montero who donated land for St Mary's Cathedral and other ecclesiastical purposes near present day downtown Salinas. A post office called Asís was established in 1866, but it did not stay open very long; its last letter being dated October 15, 1867. A new post office called Soledad opened on December 1st of that year; it continued operating until 1912 when it merged with Paso Robles' then existingpost office under the same name. The early pioneers here included Russian émigré Dmitry Mikhailovich Kuznetsov (1827-1902), stagecoach driver Manuel Aguirre (1850-1925), lawyer Félix Vázquez (1857-1937) and banker Lorenzo Coolidge Bejarano (1862-1945). They came here to escape social unrest back home where people were struggling with poverty while their government helped manage things better back home according to American standards at that time... they brought over their skills with farming and milling which soon became known throughout Southern California due to their efforts here... these men set about building up this community into what it is today including creating roads and bridges etcetera

Salinas, California is a city in Kings County, California, United States. The population was 41,569 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Kern County by population. The name of the town derives from Spanish—salinas meaning "salted water" and "california" meaning "the land of the Californias"—and means simply that it is on or near Salinas Creek. The first Europeans to visit what is now Salinas were traders from Spain who landed there in 1769 during their journey across what is now Mexico. They named this new place San Francisco de los Montes because of their observation that Mount Diablo looked like a giant saltire in the distance. In 1836, General Antonio López Alvarado founded Guadalupeño Settlement here as part of his quest for land east of Sierra Nevada Mountains. A year later he granted Rancho Rinconada to José Joaquín Cámpora y Costilla and Juan Bautista Morelos with 3,000 acres (12 km²). In 1839-40 Mexican War veteran Pio Pico discovered oil fields near present-day Salinas while exploring for petroleum deposits east of Fresno and began production here on his rancho el Palo de Ojo (the Eye Rock). From 1898 until World War II much of what is now downtown Salinas was undeveloped agriculture around today's downtown core where salinity levels have lowered significantly due to well stimulation programs initiated by local government entities over many years since then! On July 15, 1949 representative Thomas Mazer met with representatives from 24 other California communities interested in forming a proposed settlement at Laguna Seca for workers necessary for Expo '49; but no agreement was reached and Plans were discontinued on October 1st that same year In 1952 Nacio Vidal purchased 5% interest in Imperial Oil Company which became ChevronTexaco when it merged with Texaco Incorporated on November 11th 2002
