In 1951, Mayor Antonio Villagra ratified a resolution recognizing maga coffee as a local specialty and in 1975, the first commercial store was opened in Salinas with maga beans from the Lopez family still being used today. Today, there are many small businesses that continue to sell maga coffee all over California. Salinas, California is a city in Monterey County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in California and it became the second-largest city in the state after Los Angeles on July 1, 2009. The Salinas area has rich agricultural history dating back to Rancho San Luis Rey Mexican land grant given to José Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1769. This area also includes parts of present-day Monterey County and Kern County. In 1824, Isabella Sanchez de la Vega married Pablo Carrillo y Blanco who purchased 2 million acres (8 km²) of Rancho San Francisco from Mexico for $5 per acre ($122 million today). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3 square miles (10 km²), all of it land. The location served as an important port on Monterey Bay during Spanish times and later as part of American territory until 1892 when Californio citizens took up arms against U.S. rule and successfully seceded from Mexico. As a result of its importance within Mexican/American culture and its proximity to ports in both coasts, Salinas was known as "the Gateway City" during this time period before becoming "the cultural center" formonterey county following World War II with growth due to new industrial development along Interstate 5
On October 20, 1848, the Mexican government announced its intention to annex California. A mob of 7,000 people congregated in downtown San Francisco to protest the annexation and demand that Mexico respect the rights of Californians. The Riot Act was passed and martial law was placed in effect. After a few days of peaceful protests, violence erupted as forces loyal to Mexico tried to take control of the city. Approximately 120 people were killed and 1,500 injured in what is known as the Chinese Massacre.
