In 1871, John Wesley Sheppard opened up what became known as "Sheppard's Valley" near present day Walnut Avenue and Alma Street as part of his efforts to develop agricultural land around Salinas for sale to settlers. Sheppard also developed what are now downtown Salinas into one large area for commercial development and began building homes along Alma Street between Present Day Mission Road (now State Route 101) and Pacific Avenue (now State Route 237). At that time there were few public transportation options available outside San Francisco so many people worked off their farms or drove buses or cars back and forth between downtown Salinas and surrounding areas using muleback or horseback service provided by Sheppard's truck company called White Horse Overland Transportation Company Ltd.. Today downtown Salinos contain many businesses such as banks, restaurants etc., making it one of most vibrant cities on the West Coast with an excellent qualityof life despite its small size
