The Mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded in 1776 and the Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1821. In 1853, the California Gold Rush led to increased human activity and a population increase in San Anselmo. In 1861, the United States acquired California from Mexico and on January 11, 1866, San Anselme became part of Alameda County.
