In 1849, two brothers named John and Peter San Anselmo founded the town of San Anselmo in Marin County, California. The brothers were inspired to establish a small community because they believed that democracy could only be realized through a strong population presence. In 1853, they built the first permanent home in what is now San Anselmo. The San Anselmians soon became known for their peaceful and friendly character, and their communal spirit was model for later townsfolk. The town was originally an agricultural village with few buildings other than barns and homes. But over time, the town's infrastructure began to grow: A school was constructed in 1857; a post office was established in 1865; churches were erected in 1870-72; and a water tower was built in 1889. Over time, too, the town developed into a commercial center with businesses including grocery stores, auto stores, bakeries, hotels and restaurants. But despite its progressivism (San Anselmians were known for their support of community activism), San Anselmio never achieved great success as an urban center. Its dense population made it difficult to thrive economically; moreover, its location far from major highways made it difficult to attract businesses and residents alike. In 1978-79, however, following the passage of Proposition 13 (a measure which limited property taxes), San Anselmio began to experience growth and revival as more people moved into the area from outside of Marin County. Today, San Anselmio is one of Marin County's most vibrant communities with a rich history and culture that can be enjoyed by all who live there.
