The City of San Anselmo was founded on April 1, 1853 by Father Francisco Xavier Villalobos. The city served as the capital of Northern California from 1853 to 1865 and then again from 1878 to 1888. It is also the oldest continuously inhabited community in Alameda County. In 1868, San Anselmo became part of the newly formed City of Oakland. On November 3, 1886, San Anselmos incorporation into Contra Costa County was approved by voters.
