San Anselmo, California is a small city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north coast of San Francisco Bay and is part of the San Francisco Metropolitan Area. Its name comes from the Spanish word "san" meaning "a place to dwell" and "nelvo" meaning "native." The first Europeans to visit what is now San Anselmo were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his party on October 1, 1542. The town was founded by Captain John Sutter in 1846 as an agricultural center for land grant farmers in the Presidio of Monterey County. Sutter's mission was to found a new settlements which would be self-reliant with water resources unavailable from outside sources. By 1852, San Anselmo had become a town with over 1,500 people and a post office. A year later it passed through a change in management when James Wolk became Postmaster General of California and ordered that all towns receiving mail must have an office within one mile (1 km) of their homes or face closure without pay. In 1857, during the Gold Rush at Lompoc Cove near present-day Daly City, two men - George Bidwell and William Irvine - discovered large amounts of gold ore while dredging for ships off Point Reyes Station on November 10th (). Soon after this discoveryver more than 100 prospectors began arriving in Searchlight Landing () opposite Point Reyes Light (), seeking to strike it richstrike it rich vein after vein (). At its peak production around 1870-1875 (), mining operations at Point Reyes caused significant harm to local ecology by producing huge amounts of sandstone dust that interfered with air quality and createdAmbush Rock () today’s Punta Gorda neighborhood). In 1893 the US government leased Point Reyes Station back to private owners who discontinued mining thereafter until 1975 ().
