San Anselmo, California (population: 37,000) is a town in Marin County, California. The name of the town was given to it by General Walter P. Dearborn in 1849 as a tribute to his father, San Francisco Commodore George B. Dearborn. The population was 43,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Marin County and extends into Sonoma County to the south and east. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Anselmo were Spanish explorers from southern Spain who landed there in 1769 on an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà. They named the area Santa Margarita del Diablo for one of their Catholic saints and built Mission San Francisco de Asís on Point Reyes Peninsula forded by the Sacramento River. In 1821, Mexican troops under Genetio Gomez destroyed both missions during a conflict over land grants near Sausalito which had become part of Mexico following its independence from Spain. In 1849, General Walter Prentice Dearborn granted town status to San Anselmo when he acquired Rancho Rinconada north of present-day downtown on Mount Diablo overlooking Highway 101 between Sausalito and Tiburon. A year later he donated land south of Main Street including what is now downtown San Anselmano plus parts of present-day Rinconada Heights and Carpinteria hills for public use as well as pastureland for sheepskin tannery production until 1865 when that operation closed due to competition from larger tanneries in Northern California.. In 1861 Congress approved plans for the creation of two military posts at Sausalito Bay - Fort Mason on Mare Island east sideof Laguna Beach Harbor while also authorizing construction of Fort Lawsite opposite Monterey Bay -both responsible for harbor defense against potential attack from Japan should war break out with Russia or China.. The first post arrived in 1863 but no action took place because Of Army financial difficulties caused by inflation within America during this time period.. In 1867 Captain John Furlong became Commandant atFort Lawsite before becoming Acting Governor after Governor William Richardson resigned because he disapproved of President Ulysses S Grant's decision not to allow American participation in the International Meridian Conference held in Paris that summer.. On October 12th 1870 Commodore George B Dearborn delivered his keynote address entitled "Opening Remarks Before His Honor The Mayor Of Sausalito" which inspired him say "Sausalito will never be forgotten – her citizens are so prominent Examples all over our country." He also urged people throughout America not onlyto visit locales such as Sausalito but also some points along Interstate 5 including Redwoods National Park where he observed Yosemite Valley from his home atop Half Dome . CommodoreDearborn died suddenly less than two weeks later at Fort States Mansion Pasadena CA having left behind extensive notes about his experiences around North America which were published posthumously as "A Narrative History Of United States Naval Forces On And Offshore At Sea". It has been estimated that Commodore Dearborn may have saved hundreds if not thousands lives during his career combined with promoting American naval activity off shore especially during times of war like World War II where Navy warships could often be seen offshore enforcing American policy without actually coming close to any real combat .. Today much credit goes deservedly towards Admiral Chester Nimitz who was then Commandant At large Fleet Air Arm USN who played a critical role leading up To Pearl Harbor when Japanese forces attacked US soil

San Anselmo was founded in 1853 by businessman George Hearst and his wife, Margarita. The town straddles the San Francisco Bay and is located on a peninsula that separates it from Marin County to the north. At its peak, San Anselmo had a population of over 100,000 people and was considered one of the wealthiest towns in California. However, over time, the town's economy began to decline as its boundaries shrunk and its location made it difficult to compete with larger metropolitan areas. Today, San Anselmano retains a small but culturally significant population of about 10,000 people. The first occupants of what is now San Anselmo were Native Americans who lived on nearby Point Reyes Island before moving downriver to their current location around 8400 BC. In 1817, Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza established himself at Point Reyes Station after sailing around Cape Horn. He named the island Santa Cruz de la Calzada (Strawberry Coast). Over time, other European explorers also established settlements here including Captain John Doolittle in 1849 during his explorations of North America via shipwrecked sailors; Richard Montgomery in 1860; and Horace Earle Smith in 1871 during his survey expedition that included exploration of part of modern-day Marin County. In 1865, when California became an independent United States state following the gold discovery at Sutter's Millnear Sacramento City*, San Anselmo became part of Marin County under Governor Mariano Rivera*. The county seat moved from Sausalito to Petaluma in 1903.* By 1907*, most residents within the city limits had left for better fortunes elsewhere* although some continued living there until after World War II when most properties were sold off or gifted to local organisations such as YMCA* Junior Boys & Girls Club* Art gallery* library*.
