On November 6th, 1906, San Anselmians voted by referendum to incorporation into the state of California. After years of growth and development,San Anselmo reached its peak in the 1920s with population numbers reaching over 100,000 residents. However, during World War II the city became embroiled in conflict with neighboring Santa Clara County over control of Naval Air Station Moffett Field. This led to increased crime and social unrest within the city limits; however, these problems eventually died down after 1945 when military activity decreased overall in SanAnselmo. The first Europeans to visit San Anselmo were the Portuguese in 1542. The mission was founded in 1797 by Father Francisco Bancroft. San Anselmo Missionery School was founded in 1836 and is still active today. In 1849, the Spanish built a fort on Point Reyes Peninsula and the mission was abandoned. The mission was re-established in 1851, but closed in 1957 due to budget cuts.
