George Wright and his men on the banks of Suisun Bay. San Anselmo became one of America's most important naval stations during World War II and later played a key role in the development of Silicon Valley. Today the town is home to over 100 businesses and restaurants, twelve schools, two hospitals, and two military bases. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Anselmo were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770. A mission at Point Reyes had been established only a year earlier but it failed due to hostile natives and bad weather conditions. A second mission—San Rafael—was built about three miles east of modern day San Anselmos shoreline on Nob Hill Creek in 1772-1773 under command of Fray José de Arce y Pacheco y Menocal (Apostle José de Arce). After Arces death in 1774 an epidemic swept through Mission Santa Catalina which killed more than 50% of its population including Jesuit priests; however, this event did not dampen religious zeal among the colonists for converting Native Americans (by then known as Californios). This led to further missions being erected along with presidios (sanctuaries) such as Presidio Real del Norte near Monterey or Santa Cruz del Sur at Sausalito before finally becoming part of Alta California under Mexican rule following Francisco Gómez de la Vega's expedition in 1821-1824. As Alta California grew increasingly complex with numerous races living together side by side there was much competition for resources including land ownership rights within specific regions which led to many skirmishes and battles over control of territory both militarily and diplomatically throughout Mexican rule culminating with Gómez's successful attempt to annex all present day Sonoma County into Alta California upon his return from Spain in 1827-28 seeking revenge for being thwarted at Buena Vista Hill four years earlier when he had successfully invaded northern Sonoma County despite having no military force other than horsemen/adventurers - something that Orange County Sheriff Edwin Walker would ironically experience several times during his own career should events ever take such a drastic turn thereabouts...thus beginning what would eventually be known as "The Time Machine" type event where various things could actually happen e.g., Napa County becoming part of Sacramento County instead; etc...all while our local politicians continued playing polo on Sundays!
The town of San Anselmo, California was founded in 1842 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. It grew rapidly during the Gold Rush and soon became a thriving community with its own school system, churches, businesses and homes. The population reached 2,500 by the end of 1849. In 1870, San Anselmo incorporated as a city and quickly prospered due to its location on the water front and its access to goods from all over California. In 1906, San Anselmo was attacked by a group of Native Americans known as the Geronimo Trail Riders. The town was heavily damaged and nearly destroyed but fortunately for San Anselmo it survived thanks to the help of local militia forces who fought off the attackers. The city gradually regained its former prominence over the next few years as various new businesses were built and residents started moving back into their homes. In 1960, San Anselmos City Council approved plans for developing a large site at present-day downtown San Anselmo which would be used for shopping malls, office buildings and other high-end developments. The project finally came to fruition in 1996 when construction began on the current downtown area which is now one ofSanAnselmos most vibrant neighborhoods
